Director and State Geologist, Professor

John Metesh has been with the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology as a Research Hydrogeologist, Research Division Chief, Assistant Director, and since 2012 as Director and State Geologist. His 30-year association with the Bureau and the Montana University System has provided many opportunities to explore groundwater-surface water management under a wide variety of hydrogeologic settings. He has published nearly 50 reports, articles, and abstracts related to hydrogeology and geochemistry as well as many unpublished reports relied upon for critical decisions related to legislation, natural resource damages, mine permitting/reclamation, and water rights.

Metesh received his Ph.D. from the University of Montana in Geology, his M.S. in Geological Engineering from Montana Tech, and his B.S in Earth Science from Montana State University. He is a Registered Professional Geologist (Wisconsin).
